Surgical oncology is a field of cancer that deals with the diagnosis and the treatment of cancer. A colectomy includes removal of the colorectal tumours, the surrounding lymph nodes and several neighbouring lymph nodes.  The entire colon is removed in a total Colectomy , a subtotal colectomy removes most of the colon and the procedure to remove a portion or segment of the colon is known as a segmental colectomy.

Pneumonectomy

A pneumonectomy is a surgerical procedure that is performed to remove an entire lung. It may be performed to treat tuberculosis or non-small cell lung cancer and conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and. The types of pneumonectomy procedures includes Standard Pneumonectomy where only the diseased left or right lung is removed and Extrapleural Pneumonectomy where the diseased left or right lung is removed, in addition to portions of the diaphragm, pericardium and the pleura. An extrapleural pneumonectomy is a common treatment for mesothelioma.

Thoractomy

A thoracotomy is a surgery that is performed to open the chest cavity. During the procedure, an incision made in the chest to allows surgeons to access the throat, lungs, heart and diaphragm. A thoracotomy incision can be made between the ribs, on the front or the side of the chest, down the front of the chest, through the breastbone, across the side and around the back of the chest. A Thoractomy is a common treatment procedure for patients suffering from lung cancer or other diseases of the lungs and the heart.
